Cherry MX 6.0 Mechanical Keyboard – Review

Conclusion

The quality of the Cherry MX Board 6.0 overall and it’s no frills approach allows for an almost pure untainted mechanical experience which is oft unseen in the world of mechanicals. The sleek aluminium finish to the keyboard offers a nice robustness with the wrist rest despite its ability to suck in dirt adding to the overall feel.

The MX Board 6.0 is certainly not without faults however, there are certainly a few things I would have liked to have seen in this keyboard not least RGB backlighting (if not RGB, white would have also been preferable), but I have one other minor gripe with the backlighting. This being that when the Windows Key Lock is enabled, the backlight does not highlight it. Other keys such as the Caps Lock and the Num Lock light blue when enabled, the Windows Key Lock stays the same as the rest of the backlight (off/red). When the Windows Key Lock is disabled the Windows key glows blue which can be a tad distracting if you disable the backlight entirely and need to use it. I feel this could be fixed by having the Cherry icon key which is pressed to enable the lock lighting up blue like the other keys.

I can also understand the reasoning for not using a fully detachable cable on this keyboard, considering some of the horror stories about snapped ports and it is nice to see the extra reinforcement to make sure the cable is nice and snug. The cable quality as mentioned earlier is also excellent.

After waiting for stock to land at various retailers in the UK the retail price of the Cherry MX Board 6.0 has come to around £150. This price does mean it hits a high price point compared to some other models that are available, part of this is down to the Cherry name itself; Cherry switches being the building blocks of other mechanical keyboards, you can be sure when the manufacturer wades in, it is done right.

This is a keyboard that I have come to like over these past few days including its red switches, it’s by no means perfect but well deserving of the Dave Plays Silver Award!

I would like to thank Cherry for reaching out and allowing me the chance to take a look at this piece of hardware.
